Introduction to Golestan Burn and Trauma Hospital
Due to the absence of a comprehensive specialized and subspecialized burn care center in
western Iran, patients suffering from severe and extensive burns were compelled to seek
advanced medical services in healthcare facilities located in other provinces. This issue
had long been recognized as one of the major challenges facing the healthcare system in
the Zagros region, and the establishment of a dedicated trauma and burn center was
considered a strategic demand and an essential healthcare need for the region.
In response to this need and in line with the development of specialized healthcare
infrastructure, Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, through continuous efforts and
strategic planning, successfully secured approval for the construction of Golestan Hospital
during the visit of the Supreme Leader to Kermanshah Province in 2011. The financial
resources required for the construction, equipping, and commissioning of the hospital were
allocated and funded through the approved projects associated with this visit.
Golestan Hospital officially commenced operations in 2019 as the Specialized Burn and
Trauma Center of Western Iran. The hospital was established with the mission of providing
specialized, subspecialized, and multidisciplinary care to burn patients and other patient
groups requiring advanced medical services. To achieve this goal, the hospital has been
equipped with a comprehensive range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and support facilities.
The hospital’s paraclinical services include advanced radiology, ultrasonography,
echocardiography, clinical laboratory, and pharmacy units. In addition, its inpatient and
treatment departments comprise a specialized burn emergency unit, Intensive Care Unit
(ICU), burn surgery and treatment wards, Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) unit,
physiotherapy department, and various other specialized and support services, all operating
in accordance with current healthcare standards and clinical best practices.
Today, Golestan Hospital serves as one of the strategic healthcare infrastructures in
western Iran, playing a significant role in improving equitable access to specialized and
subspecialized healthcare services, reducing patient referrals to other provinces, and
enhancing the overall quality of healthcare delivery throughout the region.
Golestan Hospital, with 50 approved beds and advanced specialized and subspecialized
infrastructure, is recognized as a referral center for specialized medical services and critical
care. The hospital’s treatment capacity includes 20 dedicated burn beds (17 adult and 3
pediatric), 12 ICU beds, 18 Bone Marrow Transplantation beds, 6 emergency department
beds, 6 special care beds, 2 operating room beds, 2 recovery beds, and 1 emergency
operating room bed.
Currently, the total number of active beds has increased to 58, reflecting the effective
utilization of available resources and the hospital’s readiness to meet the healthcare needs
of both domestic and international patients. Furthermore, the hospital possesses
considerable physical and operational expansion capacity, including the potential to add
two additional beds within the operating room complex. This development capability will
support future expansion of subspecialized services and increased patient admission
capacity.
These capacities and expansion opportunities have established Golestan Hospital as a
dynamic, progressive, and development-oriented institution committed to delivering safe,
high-quality healthcare services in accordance with national and international standards.
Although the outpatient clinic section is not currently operational, it was designed with a
development-oriented approach based on future healthcare expansion requirements. The
existing infrastructure has been planned in such a way that each room within this section
can be converted into an inpatient area accommodating two treatment beds, thereby
providing the potential to increase the hospital’s operational capacity by an additional 10
inpatient beds.
Moreover, within the framework of its comprehensive Emergency, Disaster Management,
and Business Continuity Plan, Golestan Hospital maintains the necessary preparedness
and capacity for the rapid expansion of inpatient services and can increase its admission
capacity by up to 21 additional beds when required. This capability is the result of strategic
planning, robust support infrastructure, and flexible operational resources, enabling the
hospital to respond effectively to sudden increases in healthcare demand during
emergencies, mass casualty incidents, and public health crises. This preparedness
demonstrates the hospital’s high level of organizational resilience and its commitment to
maintaining the continuity of safe, high-quality, and standards-based healthcare services
under all circumstances.
